Mouse Acceleration Explained

An in-depth guide to velocity-dependent pointer scaling, the difference between 1:1 linear tracking and acceleration curves, and how it impacts muscle memory.

1. What Is Mouse Acceleration?

Mouse acceleration is an operating system or software setting where your on-screen cursor displacement depends not only on how far you physically move your mouse, but also on how fast you move it.

2. Linear 1:1 Motion vs Accelerated Motion

Linear 1:1 Tracking (Acceleration OFF)

Physical Distance = Constant On-Screen Distance

Moving your mouse 10 cm slowly or 10 cm in a rapid flick rotates your in-game crosshair by the exact same number of degrees every single time.

Accelerated Tracking (Acceleration ON)

Physical Distance × Velocity Multiplier

Moving your mouse 10 cm slowly moves the cursor 500 pixels. Moving that same 10 cm quickly multiplies the output to 1800 pixels.

3. Mouse Acceleration vs DPI vs Sensitivity

  • DPI (Hardware): Measures physical sensor resolution (how many pulses per inch). Remains constant at all speeds.
  • Sensitivity (Software): A fixed constant multiplier (e.g. 1.5×) that scales sensor pulses into camera rotation.
  • Acceleration (Dynamic Curve): A variable multiplier that increases dynamically as hand speed increases.

4. Why Most Gamers Turn It Off (And Who Uses It)

In tactical shooters (CS2, Valorant), consistent muscle memory requires pure spatial reproducibility. If crosshair rotation changes based on hand panic or swipe speed, landing consistent micro-flicks becomes difficult.

5. How to Disable Mouse Acceleration in Windows

  1. Press Win + R, type main.cpl, and hit Enter.
  2. Click the Pointer Options tab at the top.
  3. Uncheck "Enhance pointer precision".
  4. Click Apply and OK.
FAQ

Mouse Acceleration FAQ

Common questions about mouse velocity scaling and aiming consistency.

Is mouse acceleration always bad?
Default Windows acceleration is poorly calibrated for gaming because it uses a non-linear curve without an upper speed cap. However, advanced custom curves (using software like Raw Accel or Custom Curve) are used by high-level Quake and arena shooter players.
How do I know if mouse acceleration is turned on?
Place your mouse against a ruler. Move it 10 cm across your desk very slowly and note where the cursor lands. Return to the starting point, then flick the mouse 10 cm very quickly. If the cursor travels significantly further on the fast flick, acceleration is active.
