2. How the Observational Test Works
Linear 1:1 tracking means that moving your mouse 10 cm across your desk will always generate the exact same number of screen pixels, regardless of whether you move your hand slowly over 3 seconds or flick it across in 100 milliseconds.
If mouse acceleration is active, the operating system multiplies incoming coordinate counts by a speed coefficient. Consequently, the rapid flick will record significantly more pixels than the slow movement over the exact same physical distance.

- Web browsers cannot directly inspect the Windows kernel registry or in-game mouse drivers.
- This test relies on empirical observation: comparing displacement across two distinct velocity conditions.
- For maximum accuracy, place a physical metric ruler firmly against your mousepad to ensure both swipes cover the exact same 10 cm distance.
4. How to Interpret Your Variance Results
Linear Tracking: Normal human ruler variance. Acceleration is almost certainly disabled.
Positive Acceleration: The fast swipe traveled further. Windows Enhance Pointer Precision or driver acceleration is active.
Sensor Malfunction: Optical sensor spin-out or tracking loss during rapid flick movements.
5. How to Disable Acceleration in Windows
- Press Win + R, type
main.cpl, and hit Enter. - Click Pointer Options.
- Uncheck "Enhance pointer precision".
- Set pointer speed to 6/11 and click OK.
