Windows Pointer Settings vs Game Sensitivity

Understand how the 4 input layers—Hardware DPI, Windows Pointer Multiplier, Raw Input, and In-Game Sensitivity—interact to shape your crosshair movement.

1. The 4 Layers of Mouse Sensitivity

When you move your mouse across your desk, the signal flows through four distinct stages before rendering a frame on your monitor:

1. Hardware Optical Sensor:Mouse DPI (e.g. 800 CPI)
2. Windows Operating System:6/11 Pointer Speed & Acceleration
3. Game Input Pipeline:Raw Input (WM_INPUT)
4. 3D Game Engine:In-Game Sensitivity Slider & Yaw

2. Windows 11 Pointer Speed Multipliers

The Windows pointer speed slider (in main.cpl) does not change sensor DPI; it applies a software multiplication or decimation filter:

Windows NotchMultiplier FactorImpact on Input Accuracy
1 / 110.03125× (1/32)Extreme decimation, drops movement pulses
3 / 110.25× (1/4)Heavy software decimation
6 / 11 (Center)1.0× (Exact 1:1)Pure 1:1 hardware coordinate passthrough (No distortion)
8 / 111.5×Artificial pixel skipping (interpolates missing counts)
11 / 11 (Max)3.5×Severe pixel skipping, jumps across desktop

3. When Windows Affects Games (Raw Input vs DirectInput)

Modern competitive titles (CS2, Valorant, Overwatch 2) implement Raw Input, querying the hardware driver directly and bypassing the Windows 6/11 setting completely. Older titles or games without raw input will multiply their camera rotation by the active Windows pointer speed multiplier.

4. Why "Enhance Pointer Precision" Ruins Aim

"Enhance Pointer Precision" is a misleading name for non-linear mouse acceleration. When active, moving your mouse 5 cm quickly will rotate your camera much further than moving your mouse 5 cm slowly, preventing your brain from building consistent spatial muscle memory.

5. The Recommended Competitive Setup

  1. Set Windows Pointer Speed to 6/11.
  2. Uncheck "Enhance Pointer Precision".
  3. In games, always enable Raw Input.
  4. Adjust your overall crosshair speed purely via Hardware DPI (800 / 1600) and In-Game Sensitivity.
FAQ

Windows vs Game Sensitivity FAQ

Common questions on OS pointer settings and raw input.

Does changing Windows pointer speed affect Valorant or CS2?
No, because games like Valorant and CS2 use Raw Input by default, which communicates directly with the mouse hardware driver and completely bypasses the Windows pointer multiplier.
Why does 6/11 matter if games use raw input?
6/11 guarantees that in-game 2D menus, inventory screens (like in PUBG, Apex, and MMOs), and your desktop experience maintain exact 1:1 linear tracking without artificial pixel skipping.
