1. Why Settings Can Match But Feel Different

If you recently bought a new mouse, formatted your PC, or switched games, you might find that your cursor feels completely foreign even though you configured the exact same 800 DPI and 1.0 Sensitivity.

Perceived cursor speed is determined by a combination of operating system scaling, USB transmission timing, game engine angular math, and physical friction.

2. Step 1: Check Windows Pointer Speed & Scaling

Open main.cpl (Pointer Options). Ensure your pointer speed slider is sitting at the 6th notch (6/11). If Windows defaulted to 7/11 or 8/11 after a major update, the OS is applying a 1.5× or 2.0× software multiplier.

3. Step 2: Check for Re-Enabled Windows Acceleration

Windows feature updates frequently re-enable "Enhance pointer precision" automatically. Verify that this box is unchecked to eliminate non-linear velocity curves.

4. Step 3: Verify USB Polling Rate (Hz)

If your mouse switched to Bluetooth mode or entered battery-saver mode, its polling rate may have dropped to 125 Hz (8 ms delay), making cursor tracking feel sluggish compared to 1000 Hz (1 ms delay).

Sensitivity numbers are not interchangeable across game titles:

  • A sensitivity of 1.0 in CS2 uses a yaw of 0.022.
  • A sensitivity of 1.0 in Valorant uses a yaw of 0.070 (over 3.18× faster!).
  • Higher Field of View (FOV) settings compress the visual scene, making camera rotation appear visually slower for the same physical hand movement.

6. Step 5: Mouse Skates & Pad Surface Friction

Physical hardware changes alter tracking feel dramatically. A mouse weighing 60 grams with 100% virgin-grade PTFE feet will glide with substantially less kinetic friction than a 95-gram mouse with worn black rubber skates on a humid cloth mousepad.

7. Step 6: Sensor Lift-Off Distance & Firmware

Different optical sensors (e.g. PixArt PAW3395 vs HERO 2 vs Focus Pro) feature slightly different factory calibration curves. A nominal "800 DPI" setting on one mouse may measure as 785 DPI, while another measures as 830 DPI (+5.7% real-world difference).
