1. What Is Windows Pointer Speed?

Windows Pointer Speed is an operating-system-level software translation multiplier. When your mouse sends raw coordinate updates over the USB connection, Windows consults an internal lookup table to determine how many pixels to displace the cursor across your desktop.

Because software cannot invent new physical sensor resolution, Windows multiplies coordinate values. At 8/11 (2.0×), the cursor moves 2 pixels per hardware count, jumping over alternating pixels.

Notches 1 to 5 (Below 6/11)

Count Dropping (Decimation)

To slow down the cursor, Windows discards incoming hardware data. At 4/11 (0.5×), exactly 50% of your hand's physical micro-movements are deleted from the input stream.

4. Why Pointer Speed Is Not DPI

Changing pointer speed in Windows never alters the sensor's physical resolution. An 800 DPI mouse set to 8/11 in Windows does not become a 1600 DPI mouse; it remains an 800 DPI mouse with an artificial software multiplier that degrades targeting precision.

5. How to Reset Pointer Speed to 6/11

  1. Press Win + R, type main.cpl, and press Enter.
  2. Click the Pointer Options tab.
  3. Drag the slider to the 6th notch from the left (exact center).
  4. Uncheck "Enhance pointer precision".
  5. Click Apply and OK.

Why does 8/11 cause pixel skipping?
At 8/11, Windows applies a 2.0x software multiplier. When your mouse sensor sends 1 count, Windows moves the cursor 2 pixels. The cursor physically skips over the pixel in between, making 1-pixel precision impossible.
If my mouse feels too fast, should I lower Windows speed to 4/11?
No. Lowering to 4/11 forces Windows to drop 50% of your sensor data. Instead, leave Windows at 6/11 and lower your physical mouse DPI (e.g. from 1600 down to 800 DPI).
