DPI Testing Methodology
A transparent technical specification detailing the mathematics, browser event limitations, calibration models, and physics behind our mouse DPI testing tools.
1. The Mathematical Calculation Model
DPIonMouse estimates mouse DPI based on the fundamental physical definition of optical resolution: the number of discrete count pulses generated per 1 inch (25.4 mm) of linear surface displacement:
2. What the Browser Can and Cannot Observe
Web browsers operate within an operating system application sandbox. The browser receives PointerEvent streams containing screen pixel deltas, but cannot read hardware registers, onboard profile memory, or raw USB polling interrupts.
3. Sources of Measurement Error & Variance
1. Operating System Pointer Multipliers
If the Windows pointer speed is set above or below 6/11, the operating system scales coordinate pulses before delivering them to the browser window.
2. Mouse Acceleration Curves
Non-linear acceleration ("Enhance Pointer Precision") makes pixel travel dependent on hand velocity rather than pure physical distance.
3. Human Ruler Alignment & Hand Tilt
A 1 mm human error over a 5 cm test produces a 2% variance, whereas the same 1 mm error over a 20 cm test produces only a 0.5% variance.
4. Screen Calibration & Pixel Density (PPI)
Standard CSS units assume an arbitrary 96 DPI baseline (1 inch = 96 CSS px). However, modern monitors range from 90 PPI to over 220 PPI on 4K laptops. Mode B of our DPI Tester requires manual display calibration against a real-world card (ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1 standard: 85.60 × 53.98 mm) to ensure true millimeter correlation.
5. The Multi-Trial Consistency Principle
Single-sample tests are vulnerable to hand tremors and starting-point misalignment. Recording 3 to 5 trials and computing the arithmetic mean eliminates random human noise, converging on your true optical sensor baseline.
