How Trackpads Differ from Optical Mice
A conventional computer mouse uses an optical LED or laser sensor to capture thousands of surface micro-photographs per second, generating discrete hardware integer pulses known as DPI counts.
In contrast, a laptop trackpad uses mutual capacitance rows and columns to sense finger contact geometry. The operating system's gesture subsystem applies dynamic pointer ballistic curves:
