Why Does My DPI Feel Different?
An essential guide explaining why identical DPI settings feel drastically different across varying monitor resolutions, 3D game engines, FOV settings, and sensor hardware.
1. Why the Same DPI Feels Different
DPI measures hardware counts per physical inch. How those counts translate into motion on your eyes depends entirely on the canvas they interact with:
2. Monitor Resolution: 1080p vs 1440p vs 4K
On the Windows 2D desktop, 1 count moves the cursor 1 pixel (at 6/11). Because higher resolution monitors pack vastly more pixels into the same physical screen area, an 800 DPI mouse will cover significantly less screen percentage on a 4K display:
Physical travel required to cross screen width at 800 DPI.
Physical travel required to cross screen width at 800 DPI.
Physical travel required to cross screen width at 800 DPI.
3. 3D Game Engine Yaw Constants
In 3D games, monitor pixel resolution is irrelevant. Instead, games multiply raw counts by a hardcoded yaw factor (degrees of camera rotation per count):
- Source Engine (CS2 / Apex): Uses a yaw of
0.022°per count. - Valorant: Uses a yaw of
0.070°per count (3.1818× faster than Source). - Overwatch 2: Uses a yaw of
0.0066°per count (3.33× slower than Source).
Setting a sensitivity of "1.0" in Valorant rotates your camera over three times as fast as setting "1.0" in CS2.
4. Field of View (FOV) & Visual Distortion
When you increase your FOV from 90° to 110°, more 3D world geometry is compressed into the monitor frame. Even if your physical 360° turn distance (cm/360) is identical, the peripheral visual speed appears significantly slower.
5. Real-World Sensor DPI Manufacturing Deviation
Due to minor manufacturing tolerances in optical lens mounting depth and skate thickness, sensors exhibit real-world variance from nominal values. Use our Mouse DPI Tester with a ruler to measure your exact hardware resolution.
